Uniform
The latest Marine Corps space duty uniform is a digitally patterned two-piece uniform in urban/industrial colors of black, grey and blue that performs well in city fighting and ship-board engagements. Units serving prolonged planet-side deployments are issued coveralls or two piece uniforms in a digital desert or woodland camouflage patterns that are unique to the Marine Corps. Soft cover is a grey beret, although black helmets are typically worn in combat operations. Recon Marines and Marine Scout/Snipers are the only marines authorized to wear a soft, digital “boonie” hat.
Marine Rank Insignia
There are nine steps in the enlisted rank structure. With each step up the rank structure comes increased responsibility. Starting with Private, also known as E-1, you will progress toward Sergeant Major or Master Gunnery Sergeant, both considered E-9. Once you achieve the rank of Corporal you are considered a noncommissioned officer, or NCO, and at the rank of Staff Sergeant you will be a staff non-commissioned officer, or SNCO.
There are ten steps in the officer rank structure. As a new officer in the Marine Corps you will hold the rank of Second Lieutenant, or O-1. You will be considered a company grade officer while you hold this rank. Once you achieve the rank of Major you will be considered a field grade officer. Three steps after that promotion you will join the ranks of the general officers and pin a star on your collar.
